If you love a cozy bowl of oatmeal but crave something a little more indulgent, this healthy hot chocolate oatmeal is about to become your new favorite breakfast. It’s rich, chocolatey, and comforting, yet made with whole-food ingredients that fuel your body and keep you full all morning.
This chocolate oatmeal recipe tastes like European-style hot chocolate poured over creamy oats. Instead of refined sugar or packaged cocoa mixes, it relies on banana, dates, cocoa powder, and milk to create a naturally sweet, decadent chocolate sauce. The result is a breakfast that feels like dessert, but delivers fiber, potassium, and long-lasting energy.
Whether you’re looking for a nourishing weekday breakfast, a healthier way to satisfy chocolate cravings, or a warm oatmeal bowl that actually feels exciting, this recipe checks every box.

Why you should make this hot chocolate oatmeal bowl
There are plenty of oatmeal recipes out there, but this one stands out for a few key reasons.
First, it tastes like dessert. The warm chocolate topping is thick, glossy, and deeply chocolatey, similar to a European hot cocoa rather than a thin powdered mix. Because the sweetness comes primarily from banana and dates, the flavor is rich without being cloying.
Second, it’s nutrient-dense and filling. Oats are naturally high in fiber, which helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps you full longer. The banana adds potassium, the cocoa powder provides antioxidants, and the optional protein-rich milk swap can make this a seriously satisfying meal.
Third, it’s quick and approachable. You only need about 15 minutes total and two small pots. There’s no baking, no soaking overnight, and no complicated techniques, just blend, simmer, and pour.
Lastly, this oatmeal is versatile. You can dress it up with toppings, make it higher-protein, or prep it ahead for the week. It’s equally good as a cozy weekday breakfast or a slow weekend treat.

Ingredients you will need
This recipe is split into two simple components: the hot chocolate topping and the oatmeal base.
For the hot chocolate topping
- 1 large very ripe banana
This provides natural sweetness and creates a thick, creamy texture. And no, you won’t taste the banana at all! - 1 large medjool date
Adds caramel-like depth and balances the cocoa bitterness. - 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Just enough to round out the flavors without overpowering. - ¼ cup cocoa powder or cacao powder
Cocoa powder gives a classic hot chocolate flavor, while cacao powder offers a more intense, slightly bitter edge. - 1 cup milk of choice
Dairy milk, almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or even a protein drink all work well here.
For the oatmeal
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
Quick oats will also work! The only oats that won’t are steel cut. - 2¼ cups water
You can also make your oats how you normally would, I just prefer water. - ¼ teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
A small amount makes the chocolate flavor pop.
Optional Toppings
- Flaky salt
Highly recommended, everyone loves a salty-sweet moment.

Ingredient Swaps and Substitutions
This healthy hot chocolate oatmeal is very forgiving and easy to customize.
- Milk substitutions:
Use dairy milk for richness, soy milk for protein, or oat milk for extra sweetness. A chocolate or vanilla protein shake works well if you want to turn this into a high-protein chocolate oatmeal recipe. - Sweetener options:
If you don’t have dates, substitute an additional tablespoon of maple syrup or honey. To reduce sugar, slightly decrease the maple syrup and rely on the banana. - Cocoa vs. cacao powder:
Cocoa powder is smoother and more classic. Cacao powder has a deeper, slightly bitter flavor. Both work beautifully. - Oat swaps:
Quick oats will work in a pinch (shorter cook time, softer texture). Steel-cut oats are not recommended unless pre-cooked. - Salt adjustments:
If using table salt instead of Diamond Crystal kosher salt, use about half the amount.

How you can prep and have this oatmeal for the week
This chocolate oatmeal recipe is surprisingly meal-prep friendly and works well for busy mornings.
Option 1: Prep the “hot chocolate” ahead of time.
Blend the banana, date, cocoa powder, maple syrup, and milk. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently while cooking fresh oats.
Option 2: Fully assemble the oatmeal bowls
Prepare the oatmeal and hot chocolate topping completely, then portion into containers. Store in the fridge for 3–4 days. Reheat with a splash of water or milk to loosen the texture.
Option 3: High-protein breakfast prep
Use a protein drink instead of milk to make this healthy hot chocolate oatmeal more filling. This is great for post-workout breakfasts or long mornings.
For best results, reheat slowly and stir well so the chocolate sauce stays smooth and glossy.

FAQs
Is this healthy hot chocolate oatmeal actually good for you?
Yes. This recipe uses whole ingredients, natural sweeteners, and fiber-rich oats, making it a balanced and satisfying breakfast.
Does this chocolate oatmeal recipe taste like banana?
Not at all! But the riper the banana, the less flavor you will have.
Can I make this dairy-free or vegan?
Absolutely. Just use a plant-based milk such as almond, oat, or soy milk.
Can I make this without a blender?
A blender is recommended for the smoothest chocolate sauce. If needed, mash the banana thoroughly and whisk aggressively, though the texture will be less silky.

RIP Alex Pretti and more brave people killed by US immigration officials. Power to the people.
I got out of bed, doom scrolling at 10pm, to make this and IT.WAS.WORTH.IT wowowow the only thing I did differently was I cooked the oats in a premier protein birthday cake shake
So so SO glad you liked it!

I’m so so happy you liked it <3
Brilliant! The kids ate it up this cold morning.
So glad they liked it!
Absolutely delicious and comforting, without being too sweet. I added peanut butter to the sauce for protein and would do it again! Thank you!
I’m so so thrilled you liked it, thank you for taking the time to leave a review <3
Absolutely delicious and comforting, without being too sweet. I added peanut butter to the sauce for protein (1.5T). Will definitely make this again! Thank you!
I followed the recipe for the hot chocolate exactly, and used oat milk, but I did decide to just make the oatmeal in the microwave because I wanted to put only the necessary effort into this today. This is because I saw the recipe, watched the instagram reel, and immediately craved it. I was impatient and didn’t want to wash my other small pot, so microwaved oatmeal had to suffice. haha But I did manage to use my blender and pull out a small pot for heating up the hot chocolate mixture. When it was all done I stood and ate it right at the kitchen counter.
It was wholesome, and a simple experience as far as eating went. I was comforted, and it’s what I needed. I still have leftover hot chocolate, which is now in my fridge, so I look forward to adding it to my oatmeal tomorrow and feeling that comfort again. Thank you!
Thank YOU so much for taking the time to leave a review. I am so glad you liked it and I am so glad it brought you a little bit of comfort this week <3
I love it. My toddlers love it. Minutes to make and a feel good recipe delivered to my family. Thank you!!
I’m so so thrilled you liked it! <3
Ok, ok I made it for work. First time I’ve ever actually eaten an entire bowl of oatmeal.
Double batch of everything made 12 mini servings for the kitchen staff breakfast of the day. Tiny portion held me over for two hours, so confident a larger one would fill me up.
I did double the date amount and add a splash of sugar to my oats because I like it sweet, not gonna lie. A double batch of the chocolate sauce also left me with leftovers so I guess I’ll have to make this again for staff breakfast soon!
This was so easy and delicious!! Not too sweet but felt like an indulgent dessert. Perfect ratio of liquid to oats. Already thinking about having it again tomorrow
Delicious, Justine! I saw your post and knew I needed to make this. Thank you for using your platform to make a stand in this terrifying time.
I ate one bowl the morning I made this, and just finished my second bowl now, the next morning. The assembled bowl held up great in the fridge and warmed up nicely in the microwave with extra milk and stirring. I even have some leftover hot chocolate that I’ll use on oatmeal later this week!
In the future, I’ll try to soak my dates (the smaller ones) in hot water ahead of time, as my big blender left them in chunks. I’m also thinking about adding peanut butter to the hot chocolate, as suggested above!
I’m so glad you like it! Microwaving the dates for 10-12 seconds also makes them much softer, if you want to skip the soaking <3
Didn’t know what to expect from this, but was delighted to find that it tastes wonderful and makes breakfast a little more luxurious. I love the hot chocolate sauce – I used coconut milk and the taste is great on its own. I’m always looking for ways to make oatmeal a bit more fun and this the perfect recipe to do that. Highly recommend for a quick, affordable, and filling breakfast option!
Hot chocolate + oatmeal, what an incredible combination. I had all the ingredients on hand, so executing this recipe was a breeze. I prepped the hot chocolate sauce ahead of time, and stored in the fridge. Highly recommend giving this recipe a try! Sincerely, an oatmeal lover.
So SO glad you like it and that it was quick & easy for you to make! We need to start an oatmeal lovers club!
This recipe is perfection! A decadent treat to bring joy and warmth to the never ending cold of winter. Or any time you need a sweet treat. Make this immediately!
Thank so much, I’m so glad you liked it! Here’s to hoping the cold lets up soon, ah!
Wow wow wow. This was so good and not too complicated for the morning. Used my immersion blender for the sauce and quick cooking oats with seeds from TJs. So delicious!
I’m so glad you loved it!!
Any ideas for substitutions when someone can’t eat bananas? Like allergic to bananas but desperately wants to try this recipe 😭
It sounds weird, but dice and apple and microwave it until soft, it’s a great sub and blends in super well here!
