fig oats

I know it’s a silly small recipe with only one photo, but it’s blog-worthy because these fig oats are GOOD. They are the perfect consistency, slightly sweet from figs mashed right into the oatmeal, and absolutely dreamy due to the perfect amount of cinnamon and sticky sweetness. They are such a wholesome way to start the day, and one of my favorite things to use if I happen to be lucky enough to have an abundance of figs. I used green figs in this recipe, but black figs work just as well.

If you happen to find some during the short and precious fig season, please make these oats, they are so comforting that you won’t regret it!

Oats are one of my favorite things! Here are some of my favorite oat recipes on the blog.

Pumpkin Spice Overnight Oats

These are the coziest, quickest, easiest oats for fall. They use real pumpkin, plant-based ingredients and all the best fall spices.

Savory Oats with Avocado & Kale

This is umami comfort in a bowl. With some serious congee vibes, this bowl of warm, savory goodness is whipped up in minutes, filled with satiating protein, carbs and fats and has a hint of heat that I can't get enough of. The flavors are definitely inspired by some of my favorite dishes (Nasi Goreng, Ramen, Congee to name a few) but the oats make it something all it's own. It's perfect for a rainy day or a cozy dinner.

Blended Apple Cinnamon Oats

Blended Apple Cinnamon Oats

Just when you thought you knew every way to make oats – there's another one! These oats are blended up with the apple and THEN cooked. Making them creamy, smooth, thicc (with TWO c's!) and tasting like an apple pie. You can even add in egg whites at the end for some extra protein, and they might just become the best oats you've ever had!

Fig Oats

This simple yet hearty oatmeal recipe gives you the perfect oatmeal texture, along with a sticky sweetness from melted figs and dates. The whole thing uses no extra sugars, but if you want to add a drizzle of maple syrup, I will of course cheer you on.

Equipment

  • 1 small pot or dutch oven

Ingredients

  • 12 small figs, halved
  • 2 medjool dates, chopped or torn
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon red miso paste
  • Maple syrup, optional, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Add eight figs, the dates and 1/4 cup water to a pot, reserving four figs for topping. Set the pot over medium heat and bring to a simmer.
  2. Stir and mash the figs and dates, allowing them to melt into a paste of sorts, around 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add in the oats and the remaining 1 cup of water. Stir to combine. Add the cinnamon let the oats simmer for 4-5 minutes, or until thickened.
  4. Stir in the miso paste, allowing it to melt into the thick and sweet oats. Remove the oats from the heat and let them cool for a minute or so before pouring into a bowl.
  5. Top with the remaining figs and a drizzle of maple syrup. Serve warm!

I had only 5 figs left over from when I made your fennel salad, but this was still great! I didn’t have any miso, but was inspired to drizzle tahini and it was lovely.

For this, you can skip and just add a pinch of salt if you are in a bind! The miso just adds some nice depth.

So good! I love the natural sweetness in this recipe. I only wish figs were in season longer so I could make this year round.
