Fig Oats

This simple yet hearty oatmeal recipe gives you the perfect oatmeal texture, along with a sticky sweetness from melted figs and dates. The whole thing uses no extra sugars, but if you want to add a drizzle of maple syrup, I will of course cheer you on.

Servings: 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 12 small figs, halved
  • 2 medjool dates, chopped or torn
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon red miso paste
  • Maple syrup, optional, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Add eight figs, the dates and 1/4 cup water to a pot, reserving four figs for topping. Set the pot over medium heat and bring to a simmer.
  2. Stir and mash the figs and dates, allowing them to melt into a paste of sorts, around 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add in the oats and the remaining 1 cup of water. Stir to combine. Add the cinnamon let the oats simmer for 4-5 minutes, or until thickened.
  4. Stir in the miso paste, allowing it to melt into the thick and sweet oats. Remove the oats from the heat and let them cool for a minute or so before pouring into a bowl.
  5. Top with the remaining figs and a drizzle of maple syrup. Serve warm!
