Death by Chocolate Cookies

These death by chocolate cookies are packed with oreos, chocolate candy, and all the melty chocolate pockets you could want. They’re perfect for Halloween, but also for whenever you’re craving a healthy dose of chocolate.

These Death by Chocolate Cookies are giving Halloween but in a very lowkey way. They’re dark, deeply chocolatey, packed with oreos and candy, and definitely feel at home in October. That being said, please do not think you can only make these once a year! They’re just a very good chocolate cookie with some candy, which means you can absolutely make them whenever.

The whole idea was to make the most chocolate-packed cookie possible while still keeping that texture I’m always chasing: crisp around the edges, soft and chewy in the middle, with lots of little melty pockets throughout. We’ve got oreos crushed into the dough, even more crushed oreos on the outside, and then the cream gets swirled over the warm cookies at the end. Then you add a mix of candy bars because one source of chocolate is not enough.

So if you’re making these for Halloween, they’ll fit right in. But if you’re reading this in March and thinking they look really good, please make them! You absolutely do not need a holiday (or anything else) to justify a chocolate cookie.

The three ways we’re using oreos in these cookies

Because one way is never enough. I wanted these cookies to have as much oreo flavor as possible, so we’re using the whole thing – cream and all. It might seem like an extra step to separate them, but trust me, it’s worth it. The cookies get crushed into the dough for extra chocolatey oreo flavor, then we crush a few more with turbinado sugar and salt for a crunchy coating. And the cream gets saved for the best part: swirling it over the warm cookies at the end. Obviously.

Ingredients you’ll need

For the cookies

  • 8 oreos, 69 grams of cookie, 23 grams of cream
  • 1/2 cup (113g) salted butter, divided and softened
  • 1/3 cup (72g) 5% fat greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup (50g) dark brown sugar, packed
  • 90g granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (70g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (25g) cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 158 grams candy of choice, such as Butterfingers, Crunch bars, M&Ms, Heath Bars or Twix

For the coating

  • 4 oreos
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) Turbinado sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt

Ingredient substitutions

This recipe is really customizable! Here are some substitution suggestions:

  • Butter – can be swapped for plant-based butter but no other fat substitutions are suitable here
  • Greek yogurt – swap for dairy-free Greek yogurt
  • Dark brown sugar – swap for light brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • All-purpose flour – can be swapped for King Arthur’s 1:1 Gluten-Free Baking Flour if needed.

How to make these death by chocolate cookies

Don’t let the simple extra steps intimidate you – this is still a very straightforward cookie recipe, I promise. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Prep the oreos: Separate the oreos, scraping the cream filling into a small bowl and setting it aside for later. Add the oreo cookies to a food processor and pulse until finely crushed. Transfer the crumbs to a large bowl.
  2. Brown and cool the butter: In a medium pan over medium heat, brown half of the butter then pour it directly over the oreo crumbs. Add the yogurt and mix to combine before transferring it to the fridge to cool for 10 minutes, until it’s the texture of softened butter.
  3. Mix in the wet ingredients: Add the other half of softened butter and sugars to the bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer until fluffy. Add the egg and beat again for 2-3 minutes, until the dough looks very whipped.
  4. Add the dry ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In two batches, mix this into the wet ingredients. Stop mixing as soon as a soft dough forms.
  5. Fold in the candy: Chop up any chocolate candies. I like a mix of Butterfingers, Crunch bars, M&Ms, Heath Bars and Twix. Mix the candy in with the dough then transfer it to the fridge to chill for 10 minutes.
  6. Make the oreo coating: Crush the oreos in the food processor then mix them with Turbinado sugar and salt. Scoop the cookie dough into nine 70 gram balls. Coat them in the crushed oreo sugar.
  7. Bake: Place the cookie dough balls on two parchment-lined baking sheets and bake for 14-16 minutes at 350°F convection, or 375°F standard.
  8. Swirl on the oreo cream: Swirl the oreo cream from the beginning onto the baked cookies (it will warm up and be easy to swirl), and press in some extra candy pieces. Let the cookies cool so the candy sticks, then enjoy!

Storage tips

Here’s the best way to store these cookies, based on each method:

To store the baked cookies in the fridge: These will keep in an airtight container for up to 7 days. I like to wrap each cookie in a layer of wax paper to prevent them from sticking to each other.

To store the baked cookies in the freezer: These will freeze well for up to six months. I like to line them with wax paper so they don’t stick to each other, then place them in a freezer gallon bag. To thaw, remove the cookies from the bag and let them sit at room temperature for 3-4 hours. Then they should be ready to eat!

Why is this recipe in grams?

Grams are always my preference for baking, and I hope it will be yours, too. The only way to ensure complete accuracy is through measuring by weight, not volume. One cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 120 grams to 160 grams, depending on how it was packed. This ends up causing some volatility and mismatched results.

I want to ensure you get the best results with this recipe (and I want to keep this recipe foolproof!) so I highly recommend getting a small, affordable kitchen scale if you want to move forward with this particular recipe.
