When I pitched this cacao almond butter overnight oats recipe, it was supposed to be more of a mousse than a proper overnight oats, but what it turned into is probably my favorite oats recipe yet.

These oats are thick, creamy, filled with chocolate flavor and rich almond butter, and they honestly taste like dessert. I swap between eating them in the morning and night because it hits my chocolate craving whenever I need it. Can confirm that when I first made these, my boyfriend housed both servings in one sitting. So fair to say…these overnight oats are winners??

They are also super easy to make. It’s just a quick whisk, an overnight chill (or even less time, if you’re like me and don’t pre-plan) and then an almond butter topping. Perfect for a quick breakfast or a quick craving. These oats (like me) are here for you.

Ingredients for these cacao almond butter overnight oats

  • 1/3 cup oat flour, or oats blended into oat flour
  • 1 scoop plant-based chocolate protein powder, about 30 grams
  • 3 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 3/4 cup plant-based milk of choice
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp drizzly almond butter or peanut butter

How to make these overnight oats

Like I said in the post above, these cannot be easier. Here’s a step-by-step on how to make them perfect:

  • In a large measuring cup, whisk together the oat flour, protein powder, and cacao powder.
  • Add in the maple syrup and plant-based milk and stir to combine. Add in the pinch of salt and stir until smooth.
  • Pour into two cups or ramekins and tap on the counter so that the surface is even. Chill in the fridge for 3 hours up to overnight.
  • The oats should firm up on top, so top with a layer of drizzly almond butter. Eat whenever!

Need any substitutions?

You can totally riff on this recipe if you need! Here are some common substitutions:

  • Oat flour – quick oats are a fine sub!
  • Cacao powder – normal cocoa powder is a great substitution, dutch-processed cocoa powder is even better!
  • Maple syrup – can always be subbed for honey or sugar!
  • Almond butter – you know by now I’m an equal-opportunity butter-er, use any nut butter you have on hand!

Cacao Almond Butter Overnight Oats

These oats are unlike your normal overnight oats. They are made with oat flour, giving them a smooth, dreamy, creamy texture. Add in cacao for flavor, protein for satiety and almond butter (because obviously), and these turn into overnight oats that end up tasting like dessert.
