Peach & Ginger Hot Honey Halloumi

Just when you thought halloumi couldn’t get better, let me introduce you to this Peach & Ginger Hot Honey Halloumi. It’s a ginger hot honey sauce mixed drizzled on charred peaches, grilled halloumi and it is the best appetizer for the end of summer. You can serve it on salad, on skewers, or just as an amazing side dish. It’s a crowd-pleaser and the perfect mix of sweet, savory and salty.

Peach & Ginger Hot Honey Halloumi

What is halloumi?

Halloumi is very similar to paneer, in the fact that it is a hard cheese that can be charred and grilled without melting, making it a very popular meat substitute.

It is technically classified as an unripened cheese made from a mixture of goat’s and sheep’s milk, but it occasionally contains cow’s milk. With such a high melting point it is often used for recipes that grill it, fry it or pan sear it. In this recipe, we are opting for the latter. This not only maximizes halloumi’s strong, salty flavor, but it creates a mildly softer texture that pairs perfectly with the peaches.

Ingredients you will need for these hot honey halloumi skewers

The ingredients for this are simple. Just a few spices and of course, the halloumi and peaches. Here’s everything you need!

For the ginger hot honey:

  • 1 teaspoon neutral oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha
  • 1/4 cup honey

For the halloumi and peach skewers:

  • 6 ounces halloumi, sliced
  • 1-2 large peaches firm, not ripe

How to make the ginger hot honey

This sauce comes together in minutes, here’s a quick step-by-step of how to do it:

  1. In a saucepan on medium-high heat, add the neutral oil and the ground ginger, coriander and red pepper flakes. Use a wooden spatula to bloom the spices for 1-2 minutes or until aromatic.
  2. Then reduce the heat to medium, add in the salt and honey and let the honey simmer slightly. Stir constantly.
  3. Add in the sriracha and stir until combined. Let the sauce reduce for 1-2 minutes before removing it from the heat.

How to perfectly grill the halloumi and peaches

You don’t need a grill to char these babies, a cast iron skillet will do just fine! Here’s how to perfectly char your hot honey halloumi:

  1. Gather skewers that are 6 or 8 inches long. You’ll need about 6-8 of them.
  2. Slice your peaches into wedges, and slice the halloumi into 1″ x 1″ pieces. Try to have the peach slices and the halloumi be the same thickness. This is so that when you grill them, an equal surface area will be touching the pan.
  3. Assemble each skewer by alternating between peach slices and halloumi slices. Make it so that the skewers can lay flat in the pan.
  4. Put a skillet on medium-high heat. Once warm, add the skewers to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until the peaches are slightly charred and the halloumi is a rich golden brown.

How to assemble the hot honey halloumi and peaches

Assembly for this one is easy, I know I don’t *need* to tell you, but I’m going to tell you anyway. 😉

  • Remove the skewers from the heat and immediately drizzle the hot honey on top.
  • Serve either on the skewer or off and enjoy!

This recipe looked amazing so I ran out to get all of the ingredients- and boy did it deliver! I thought it would be sweeter than it was- there was a ton of flavor, a sophisticated sweet and sour- very satisfying. This would certainly impress dinner guests as an appetizer. So good!

I had never cooked with Haloumi before but I will definitely be having it as a staple in my kitchen from now on. The grilled peaches complimented the cheese so well and the honey was the PERFECT garnish!
