Miso Maple Upside-down Toast

This miso maple upside-down toast is my grown-up love letter to cinnamon toast. You know that nostalgic, cinnamon toast that we all made growing up? This recipe reminds me of that but with just a few adult tweaks.

Finished Miso Maple Upside-down Toast

This miso maple upside-down toast is my grown-up love letter to cinnamon toast. You know that nostalgic, cinnamon toast that we all made growing up? This recipe reminds me of that but with just a few adult tweaks.

The miso in this recipe gives it a salty, slightly umami contrast, while the maple syrup gets all caramelized and gorgeous. I add in a pear for good measure (health is wealth) and then we bake it upside-down so that the top gets all gooey and delicious. And then add sesame seeds for crunch, because how could we not?

This nostalgic toast is so similar to the classic, but with an added adult twist!

Ingredients for this miso maple upside-down toast

The ingredients are so simple and straightforward for this recipe, you might already have everything on hand. And if you don’t have any miso paste, I suggest you run to your grocery store to grab some. It’s the perfect pantry staple that adds rich saltiness to your cooking. I use it all the time!

  • 2 slices bread of choice
  • 1 large pear thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon white miso paste
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

How to make this miso maple toast

This recipe is a great go-to for cozy weekend mornings or for a warm snack to satisfy your sweet tooth. Plus, it’s so easy for so much flavor! Here’s how to make it:

  • Set the oven to 350°F.
  • Lightly toast your bread slices. They’ll go in the oven later, so toast them just a bit for now.
  • Very thinly slice the pear. If you have a mandolin, use that, but otherwise, good knife skills can do the trick! The slices can be any shape or size, but you want them to be as thin as possible.
  • Mix together the butter, miso, maple syrup and cinnamon. It should form a paste.
  • Place a piece of parchment paper down on a baking sheet and use a brush to spread a thin layer of the miso mixture on the parchment paper. Make sure it is the miso layer is the same size as the bread you are using.
  • Layer the pear slices on top of the miso layer, and then place the bread on top.
  • Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes or until the sugars begin to caramelize.
  • Flip the toast over, parchment paper included. Let it sit for a few minutes before slowly and gently pulling off the parchment paper to reveal the toast.
  • Top with sesame seeds and eat right away 🙂

Middle of the Cinnamon Roll Toast

This toast is like biting into the ooey, goeey middle of a cinnamon roll. It reminds me of the cinnamon toasts I would eat as a kid, but with a hint of coconutty flavor and some plant-based magic that griddles right onto the toast, making it crisp but gooey all at once.

Apple Tahini Toast

This upside-down apple tahini toast is like apple pie in a breakfast. It's sweet, crunchy, and subtly creamy from the tahini. The apple cooks perfectly in the oven making this a gorgeous, glossy (but still low-effort!) toast.

Honey Burrata Toast with Lemon & Thyme

This honey burrata toast with lemon is simple but satisfying. It's rich and flavor but minimal with ingredients, one of my all-time favorites.
